John Abrams

Author, "From Founder to Future"

In 1973, after a five-year back-to-the-land hippie odyssey, I co-founded South Mountain Company (SMCo). Fifty years later, this 40-person worker co-op is among the world’s highest-scoring B-Corps. SMCo practices integrated architecture, building, and solar. On Dec 31, 2022, I relinquished my company ownership and employment and co-founded Abrams+Angell. Next Gen South Mountain is fully launched with a new CEO, a remarkable leadership team, full alignment, and tremendous enthusiasm. They are ready and able to take this company beyond the limits of my leadership.

I am a co-founder, facilitator, and steering committee member of Building Energy Bottom Lines (a peer group network of 60+ Northeast U.S. businesses in the architecture and construction industry), and I engage in a variety of forms of community activism, mostly involving affordable housing.

My writings include the book Companies We Keep: Employee Ownership and the Business of Community and Place, published in 2008 and still in print today. My latest book, published in 2025, is From Founder to Future: A Business Roadmap to Impact, Longevity, and Employee Ownership.

I serve on the steering committee and executive committee of The Coalition to Create the Martha’s Vineyard Housing Bank.

I live with my partner Kim on Martha’s Vineyard, and I’m very lucky that my two children and five of my six grandsons live here too!
